It went in at number one with the biggest first-week sales for a debut in a decade, won the Mercury Prize and is often cited as one of the first Britpop records.

Suede entered the UK chart at number one in April 1993 with the biggest first-week sales for a debut since Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Welcome to the Pleasuredome a decade earlier, and won that year's Mercury Prize. It followed three singles, "The Drowners", "Metal Mickey" and "Animal Nitrate", that had made Suede the most written-about new band in Britain. It is often cited as one of the first Britpop records.
