Released on Deceptive Records in March 1995, Elastica entered the chart at number one and became the fastest-selling debut since Definitely Maybe, a record it held until Arctic Monkeys in 2006. Its short, sharp songs owed more to Wire and the Stranglers than to the 1960s, closely enough that both bands' publishers sued and settled out of court. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
