Bernard Butler left Suede before Dog Man Star was finished, and some tracks were completed with session musicians. It reached number three and slid quickly down the chart, and Rolling Stone called it "one of the most pretentious albums ever released by a major label". It has since been celebrated as one of rock music's great albums.
