1987-1996, 2015-2016·London

London band formed in 1987 who became central figures in 'The Scene That Celebrates Itself,' combining shoegaze textures with pop sensibilities. Signed to 4AD by Ivo Watts-Russell after he saw them at The Camden Falcon in April 1989, the band's early sound was chaotic until Robin Guthrie produced their Mad Love EP, refining it into something "beautiful, primitive." They were regulars at venues like Camden Underworld and Syndrome club on Oxford Street, appearing in each other's videos and attending each other's shows—the tight-knit community that Steve Sutherland dubbed 'The Scene That Celebrates Itself' in June 1991. The band navigated the shoegaze-to-Britpop transition better than most, lasting until 1996 before splitting. They briefly reunited in 2015-2016.
