Pale Saints
Pale Saints signed to 4AD in 1989, the same label and the same year as Lush—both spotted by Ivo Watts-Russell at The Camden Falcon as the scene around Camden was starting to cohere. Their debut, The Comforts of Madness, helped define shoegaze's early sound and fit neatly with 4AD's ethereal house style, though the Leeds band kept some distance from the mutual-admiration-society aspect of "The Scene That Celebrates Itself." They lasted until 1996, one more casualty of a scene that had by then fallen out of critical favor.
