Pale Saints

1987-1996·Leeds

Leeds band signed to 4AD in 1989 whose debut The Comforts of Madness helped define the early shoegaze sound. Alongside labelmates Lush, they were signed by Ivo Watts-Russell after he saw them at The Camden Falcon in April 1989, as the scene was coalescing. Though they maintained some distance from the scene—less involved in the mutual admiration society that characterized 'The Scene That Celebrates Itself'—their music embodied 4AD's ethereal aesthetic. The band lasted until 1996, casualties of shoegaze's rapid commercial decline as Britpop ascended.
