Le Tigre began in New York after Bikini Kill dissolved, Kathleen Hanna's turn toward electronic feminist punk. With Johanna Fateman and JD Samson, the group pushed riot grrrl's politics into dance music, machines standing in for guitars. Hanna has described the project's visual work as fetishizing machinery like a feminist Kraftwerk, building bridges between DIY punk and conceptual art traditions, as she told Surface magazine. The band released Feminist Sweepstakes in 2001 and three albums in total before going on hiatus in 2005, with a brief reformation in 2016.
