Their first release for Virgin Records reached the UK Top 15. Its sequencer-driven textures, and the accidentally recorded drift of oscillators as studio temperatures shifted, defined the ambient aesthetic of kosmische musik for a generation of listeners.

How it was made

In 1973, Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann were experimenting with their newly acquired Moog synthesizer at The Manor, a residential studio in Oxfordshire, just testing sounds, letting the sequencer run through patterns. The tape happened to be rolling. When they played it back later, they realized they'd accidentally created something more interesting than anything they'd planned.
