Oasis's debut went straight to number one in September 1994 and was, at the time, the fastest-selling debut album in British history. It was recorded twice, at Monnow Valley and then at Sawmills in Cornwall, before Owen Morris rescued it in the mix. The BPI has since certified it ten times platinum.

Alan McGee saw Oasis open at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow in May 1993 and offered them a contract, and Creation signed them that year. Creation released Definitely Maybe, which became the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time, though the band's worldwide deal was with Sony, which licensed Oasis to Creation in the UK.
