Released two months after Ian Curtis's suicide on 18 May 1980, Closer reached number 6 on the UK charts and sealed Joy Division's reputation as post-punk's most tragic and influential band. 'On the second album, Closer, it was a bit less subtle,' Hook said of Hannett's overdubbing this time around. Curtis's lyrics, written as his epilepsy worsened and his marriage collapsed, read now as almost unbearably direct.

How it was made

Closer was recorded at Britannia Row Studios in London in March 1980, again with Martin Hannett producing. Ian Curtis's epilepsy was worsening, his marriage was collapsing, and his lyrics had grown explicitly suicidal. "Twenty Four Hours" and "Passover" dealt with guilt, isolation, and despair with unbearable directness. Hannett stripped the production even further than Unknown Pleasures—cold, reverb-heavy, emphasizing Curtis's baritone and the rhythm section's hypnotic pulse. Bernard Sumner's guitar became increasingly textural, adding atmosphere rather than melody.

When Curtis hanged himself on May 18, 1980, Closer was already completed but unreleased. Factory Records faced a dilemma: release the album and risk accusations of exploitation, or shelve it and deny the world Curtis's final statement. They released it in July 1980, two months after his death. Peter Saville's cover photograph showed a tomb in Genoa's Staglieno cemetery—an image chosen before Curtis's suicide but now unbearably prescient. Every lyric was reinterpreted as suicide note, every song as premonition. The album reached number 6 on the UK charts, transforming Joy Division from promising post-punk band into tragic legend. Closer remains one of rock's most emotionally devastating albums.
