Shows DIY distribution working at massive scale, proving the scene's ethos could outlast hardcore itself.

Fugazi's breakthrough full-length, released in 1990 and eventually selling more than 300,000 copies entirely outside the major label system, arriving just ahead of grunge's commercial explosion. It proved DIY distribution could work at a scale that unsettled the music industry — a band moving hundreds of thousands of records without a major label, corporate radio, or MTV behind it.

How it was made

Fugazi's first proper full-length was recorded at Inner Ear in late 1989 and early 1990, with the band taking more studio time than DC hardcore bands typically allowed themselves. Don Zientara and Ted Niceley captured Fugazi's live intensity while giving space to the intricate arrangements the band was developing. The title track ran seven minutes on a hypnotic groove, Joe Lally's bass line circling while Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto's guitars locked into overlapping patterns instead of power chord walls. 'Merchandise' confronted consumer culture and commodification. 'Blueprint' addressed personal relationships with the same intensity others brought to political topics. The production emphasized clarity and dynamics over raw aggression, separating each instrument in the mix. Repeater arrived just before alternative rock's mainstream breakthrough, offering a version of punk that was uncompromising in ethics, sophisticated in execution, and completely independent of industry infrastructure. The album sold over 100,000 copies without traditional promotion, proving their model could work at scale.

The label

Dischord Records
Washington, D.C. · founded 1980 · Ian MacKaye, Jeff Nelson · DC Hardcore

Founded with roughly $600 in Teen Idles earnings, Dischord released the scene's foundational records, starting with the hand-assembled Minor Disturbance EP and continuing through Minor Threat, Flex Your Head, and Fugazi's catalog. Its DIY methods, cheap ticket and record prices, and refusal to sign with major labels set the ethical template that DC hardcore and its later offshoots operated by.
