Artists from Tehran

  • Googoosh

Born Faegheh Atashin in Tehran in 1950, Googoosh was put on stage by her acrobat father at the age of three.

  • Viguen

Viguen (Vigen Derderian, 1929-2003) earned the title Iran's "Sultan of Jazz" for a reason: his 1954 single "Moonlight" is considered the first Iranian jazz song, an instant hit on the radio that cracked open the door for fusion experiments between Persian and western musical forms.

  • The Raptures

Kourosh Yaghmaei formed The Raptures in Tehran in the early 1960s, naming the band after The Ventures, whose records he and his bandmates had worn thin.
