Seattle's University District and downtown core became grunge's creative epicenter, with Sub Pop Records (founded 1986) documenting the nascent scene and venues like the Central Tavern, the Vogue, and the Off Ramp hosting seminal early shows. By 1991, when Nirvana's 'Nevermind' exploded globally, Seattle was already home to a thriving underground network of bands including Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and Pearl Jam, all connected through shared rehearsal spaces, indie labels, and a tight-knit community of musicians. The city's combination of affordable living, artistic tolerance, and geographic isolation from major music industry centers allowed a distinctive sound to develop organically.
