Salvador

Brazil

Salvador served as the crucial incubator where Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Tom Zé first collaborated in the mid-1960s, performing at the Teatro Vila Velha and organizing influential shows like the 1965 Nós, Por Exemplo concerts. The city's Afro-Brazilian street culture, particularly in neighborhoods like Pelourinho, provided the rhythmic foundation that Tropicália would synthesize with rock and avant-garde elements. Salvador's cultural ferment between 1963-1967 established the artistic relationships and experimental spirit that would explode into Tropicália once transplanted to São Paulo.
