Rio de Janeiro

Brazil

Rio served as both inspiration and rival to Tropicália, home to the bossa nova establishment that the Bahians both revered and rebelled against, particularly through encounters with João Gilberto's revolutionary style. The city hosted crucial festivals (including TV Globo's competitions) where Tropicália artists confronted traditional MPB audiences, often with hostile receptions to their electric arrangements. Rio's Museu de Arte Moderna and its intellectual scene engaged with Tropicália's provocations, while the city later became the exile destination after 1968's crackdown fragmented the movement.
