Juan Atkins was born in 1962 to a father who worked as a concert promoter, bringing Norman Connors, Michael Henderson, and Barry White through Detroit, including a Barry White show at Cobo Hall.

Derrick May moved from Detroit to Belleville as a teenager and fell in with Juan Atkins, whose younger brother rolled up in a Cadillac blasting Parliament — an image that reportedly left a mark on May before he and Atkins had even become close.

Kevin Saunderson was born in Brooklyn in 1964, and by thirteen he was sneaking into the Loft and the Paradise Garage with his older brothers, absorbing New York's club culture years before Detroit techno had a name.
