Wayne Smith

1985-1994·Kingston

Young Waterhouse singer who voiced the original "Under Mi Sleng Teng" at age sixteen, inadvertently triggering dancehall's digital revolution. Working with friend Noel Davey, Smith stumbled upon the "rock" preset on a Casio MT-40 keyboard and brought it to King Jammy on December 5, 1984. The resulting track, built from a bassline programmed by Casio engineer Hiroko Okuda for the Japanese market, became the most influential riddim in dancehall history.
