Vybz Kartel became dancehall's most influential figure of the 2010s, bringing a rap-inflected lyricism and a production sensibility that pushed the genre in new directions. He mentored a younger generation, Popcaan among them, and helped reshape the sound of Kingston even after his 2011 imprisonment.
