Throbbing Gristle came together in Kingston upon Hull in 1975, four performance artists who decided that music could be built the same way they built installations: out of tape, feedback, and calculated provocation. Chris Carter, a North London sound engineer who had learned his trade splicing tape for television and film at Elstree and Pinewood before building his own synthesizers from Practical Electronics magazine plans, brought the technical means; Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and Peter Christopherson brought the confrontational vision (as Carter recounted in Tape Op magazine).
