The Libertines
Formed in London in 1997 by Carl Barât and Pete Doherty, with John Hassall on bass and Gary Powell on drums for most of their recording career, the Libertines were the defining band of the early-2000s London scene. They built a following with guerrilla gigs in their own flats, the last of them a Bethnal Green flat they called the Albion Rooms, signed to Rough Trade in December 2001 and reached No 1 with their second album in 2004.
