The Contortions

1977-1979·New York City

James Chance's funk-damaged no wave band, combining abrasive saxophone with locked-in grooves that were deliberately destabilized. Featured Jody Harris and Pat Place on guitars, Don Christensen on drums, George Scott III on bass, and Adele Bertei on Acetone organ—a lineup that could actually play, which made their choice to play this way all the more pointed. Featured on No New York with tracks recorded "totally live in the studio, no separation between the instruments, no overdubs" at Chance's insistence. Sound hinted at the coming mutant disco mutation.
