Michael Gira formed Swans in the shadow of the no wave scene, sharing rehearsal space and touring bills with early Sonic Youth. Where no wave had been confrontational, Swans went further: dense, punishing walls of noise that made the CBGB-era scene sound almost tame by comparison.
