Steve Rubell
Steve Rubell co-owned Studio 54 with Ian Schrager, opening the former CBS television studio at 254 West 54th Street on April 26, 1977. He ran the door personally and mercilessly, according to later owner Mark Fleischman, turning away people over something as small as a shirt he didn't like; Rubell himself compared the process to "making a salad" or "casting a play." Andy Warhol, a regular, called the result "a dictatorship on the door but a democracy on the dance floor." Rubell and Schrager were convicted of tax evasion in 1979.
