Rites of Spring
Post-hardcore band featuring Guy Picciotto and Brendan Canty, active during Revolution Summer (1984-1985). Picciotto would pace the stage, voice cracking, sweat-soaked, mining emotional depths that hardcore had previously deemed off-limits. The performances challenged hardcore's macho posturing through vulnerability rather than aggression. Their emotional intensity seeded what would later be codified—and commodified—as emo, though the band rejected the label. After Rites of Spring ended, Picciotto joined Fugazi while Canty anchored the drums. The band's brief existence proved you could be aggressive and vulnerable, fast and thoughtful, punk and emotionally honest all at once.
