Nation of Ulysses arrived at the tail end of the '80s with MC5-style revolutionary rhetoric, avant-garde jazz flourishes, and live shows that could turn volatile fast. Their agitprop rock and full-throttle political posture fed directly into riot grrrl — Bikini Kill among them — drawing a straight line from DC hardcore's original scene through to feminist punk a decade later. The band pushed Revolution Summer's challenge to hardcore orthodoxy even further, proof that DC's scene kept reinventing itself creatively even after its founding bands had broken up or moved on.
