Morbid Angel

Founded by Trey Azagthoth in 1983, Morbid Angel defined death metal's occult aesthetic and technical complexity. The band recorded their debut Abominations of Desolation in 1986 but shelved it. "It wasn't up to standards," Azagthoth explained in a 1991 interview. "A debut album is gonna mark you for life... It was not good enough." They waited until 1989 to release Altars of Madness instead. Their first three albums—Altars of Madness, Blessed Are the Sick, and Covenant—are genre classics. Covenant became the best-selling death metal album of the SoundScan era, shifting more than 130,000 copies in the United States, with MTV videos and a Beavis and Butt-Head appearance. Decibel magazine rated Azagthoth the number one death metal guitarist ever. Azagthoth explained the band's philosophy in 1991: "The only real motive for our band is for people to do what thou wilt. For people to think and not to lump in with everybody else." The band remains active, though David Vincent departed in 2015 and now fronts I AM MORBID.

Altars of Madness

Redefined metal extremity and set new standards for technical proficiency and blasphemous imagery after Trey Azagthoth shelved the band's actual first album, Abominations of Desolation, in 1986. Jason Birchmeier wrote that "Few albums struck a chord within the ears and minds of the late-'80s underground metal scene" like Altars did, "setting a new precedent for metal bands to reach." A landmark release that balanced brutality with atmosphere, cementing Morbid Angel's reputation after the success of Altars of Madness and influencing death metal's evolution toward sophistication. The album demonstrated that extreme music could be compositionally complex. Trey Azagthoth's occult aesthetic—drawn from the Simon Necronomicon—was fully realized across Sumerian-mythology-inspired lyrics. The production at Morrisound captured the band's technical precision while maintaining the oppressive heaviness that defined Tampa's sound.

Covenant

1993

The best-selling death metal album of the SoundScan era, shifting more than 130,000 copies in the United States, featuring MTV videos for "Rapture" and "God of Emptiness" with heavy rotation on Headbangers Ball. "God of Emptiness" appeared on Beavis and Butt-Head, with Beavis parodying the death growls in a mock 'drive-thru' order. David Vincent credited the subsequent Black Sabbath/Motörhead tour with expanding Morbid Angel's audience exponentially. The album proved death metal could achieve mainstream success without compromise—the music remained as extreme as ever, but America had caught up.
