Ray Lugo formed Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra in New York in 2001, recording for Daptone Records alongside labelmates who were busy resurrecting soul and funk from first principles. The band became part of a Brooklyn and New York scene—Antibalas and The Daktaris among them—that reignited global interest in Afrobeat after Fela's death in 1997, a revival that also produced compilations like *Nigeria 70* (2001), documenting the fertile Lagos scene that had made the genre possible in the first place.
