Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra
New York Afrobeat band formed by Ray Lugo in 2001. Recorded at Daptone Records, part of the Brooklyn/New York scene that reignited global interest in the genre alongside Antibalas and The Daktaris. Helped establish Afrobeat as a living tradition in America, proving the music could sustain multiple bands and interpretations beyond Fela's original vision. Part of the wave of reissues and revivals that followed Fela's death in 1997, when compilations like *Nigeria 70* (2001) documented Lagos's fertile 1970s scene and became gateways for new listeners.
