Holland-Dozier-Holland

1962-1967·Detroit

Songwriting and production trio—Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland—who crafted over 25 Top 10 hits between 1962 and 1967, including ten number ones. They wrote and produced the entire Supremes breakthrough run, plus major records for the Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, and others. Their formula was precise: verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus, with hooks in every section. The arrangements were dense but never muddy. Horn sections doubled vocal melodies. String arrangements borrowed from pop orchestration. In mid-1963, Berry Gordy identified them in an interview as key A&R personnel. In 1967, they walked out over royalty disputes, gutting Motown's hit-making engine. Their departure marked the beginning of the end for Hitsville's golden age. They sued Motown for unpaid royalties, eventually settled, and started their own labels—Invictus and Hot Wax—but never recaptured the magic of their Motown years. Years later, Lamont Dozier recommended Scherrie Payne to Mary Wilson when the Supremes needed a new member.
