Eddie Fowlkes recorded for Juan Atkins's Metroplex label and ran with the Music Institute family, the Detroit club crowd that incubated the city's first wave of techno. Alongside the Belleville Three, his records in the mid-to-late 1980s helped set the foundational sound of the genre before it had a name that stuck outside Michigan.
