Bratmobile
Started "in theory" in the bathroom of a University of Oregon dorm in fall 1989 by Allison Wolfe and Molly Neuman. Moved to D.C. in spring 1991 and formed with Erin Smith, Christina Billotte, and Jen Smith. Neuman's zine gave the movement its name. Released Pottymouth (1993) before breaking up onstage at Thread Waxing Space in NYC in May 1994—"mostly my fault," Wolfe admits. Reformed in 2000, proving as Wolfe told Static magazine: "You don't get put out to pasture just because society says so."

Pottymouth
Bratmobile's scrappy 1993 debut captured the DIY spirit and became the second-most important riot grrrl statement after Bikini Kill's work. Neuman's direct drumming, Erin Smith's urgent guitar, Wolfe's breathless vocals—sometimes nearly overwhelmed by the instrumentation. Functional, driving, stripped of flash. Released shortly before the band's 1994 onstage breakup at Thread Waxing Space.
