Bad Brains

1977-present·Washington, D.C.

Pioneering hardcore band that fused punk with reggae and funk, complicating DC's speed-and-economy template. Their rhythmic experimentation pushed other DC bands toward more adventurous territory. At Minor Threat's first show in December 1980, Bad Brains headlined; fifty people showed up to the basement. Their influence on DC hardcore was both musical and philosophical—they proved the genre could incorporate diverse influences without losing its intensity. The band's fusion of styles established them as the city's most innovative punk act, creating space for later experiments like Fugazi's dub-inflected post-hardcore.
