Artist
Augustus Pablo
Melodica player who brought the instrument's reedy, devotional sound to dub. Born Horace Swaby, he attended Kingston College in the late 1960s with Clive Chin and Tyrone Downie. A schoolfriend lent him a melodica used for music lessons; when producer Herman Chin Loy saw it and asked if he could play, Pablo was invited to Randy's studio the next day. Between 1971-72 he recorded "East Of The River Nile" and "Iggy Iggy" over rhythms by Familyman and Carly. His 1976 collaboration with King Tubby, King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown, remains essential. Died in 1999.
