Augustus Pablo
Born Horace Swaby, he attended Kingston College in the late 1960s alongside Clive Chin and Tyrone Downie. A schoolfriend had a melodica for music class; Pablo borrowed it, and when producer Herman Chin Loy caught him playing, he was invited to Randy's studio the very next day. That reedy, almost devotional tone became his signature, and between 1971 and 1972 he cut "East Of The River Nile" and "Iggy Iggy" over rhythms built by Familyman and Carly. His 1976 collaboration with King Tubby, King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown, paired his melodica against Tubby's mixing board and produced one of dub's defining records.
