It made John Lydon's declaration that 'rock is obsolete' physical, fusing dub bass and jagged guitar into a lasting influence.
Packaged in an actual metal film canister holding three 12-inch 45rpm discs, Metal Box turned dub-influenced bass and jagged guitar into a statement of intent: John Lydon's declaration that 'rock is obsolete' made physical. Jah Wobble's bass carried the melody while Keith Levene's guitar layered on abrasive noise, and the record's influence on alternative music has held for decades.
How it was made
Metal Box was recorded at various studios in London throughout 1979, with PiL essentially functioning as their own producers. The album's original format—three 12-inch discs packaged in a metal film canister—was John Lydon's idea, designed to reject conventional LP packaging and allow for better sound quality at 45 rpm. The music inside went further: Jah Wobble's bass dominated the mix, playing dub reggae-influenced melodic lines while Keith Levene's guitar added jagged noise and Lydon wailed over sparse, echoing drums. Songs stretched past seven minutes. Repetitive grooves, hypnotic and unsettling.
The recording process was chaotic but productive. Wobble and Levene were consuming large quantities of drugs; Lydon was deliberately confrontational about PiL's direction. As Lydon told Jon Savage, "We wanted to make an album that sounded like nothing else, and we succeeded." Critics were divided—some found it brilliant, others unlistenable—but Metal Box's influence grew over time. Its fusion of dub, post-punk, and experimental noise anticipated industrial, trip-hop, decades of alternative music that followed. Greil Marcus called it "one of the most radical albums in rock history," and subsequent reappraisals confirmed its status as post-punk's most challenging masterpiece.
