In the issue
A full compilation of Minor Threat's entire recorded output, released by Dischord in 1989, six years after the band broke up. The timing landed well — alternative music was breaking into the mainstream that year, and a new generation of listeners was discovering hardcore's history for the first time. The compilation cemented Minor Threat's status as both hardcore icons and the founders of straight edge.
How it was made
Six years after Minor Threat broke up, Dischord released Complete Discography, compiling everything the band had officially recorded. The timing proved perfect—alternative music was achieving mainstream visibility in 1989, and a new generation was discovering punk's history. The compilation's liner notes included essays contextualizing Minor Threat's work and the DC scene, photographs from the band's three-year run, and lyrics that demonstrated their intellectual engagement with punk's promises and contradictions. Complete Discography became the definitive way to experience Minor Threat. The original EPs and album had been out of print for years, commanding high prices on the collector market. The compilation introduced Minor Threat to bands like Nirvana, who cited them as influences, and to the emerging emo and post-hardcore scenes that saw them as foundational. All 26 songs fit on one disc. Minor Threat's entire existence, digestible in under an hour. Complete Discography proved that the band's influence had only grown since their breakup—their commitment to intensity, clarity, and ethical consistency remained a challenge to every band that followed.

The label
Founded with roughly $600 in Teen Idles earnings, Dischord released the scene's foundational records, starting with the hand-assembled Minor Disturbance EP and continuing through Minor Threat, Flex Your Head, and Fugazi's catalog. Its DIY methods, cheap ticket and record prices, and refusal to sign with major labels set the ethical template that DC hardcore and its later offshoots operated by.
