In the issue
Glenn Branca's first solo album, released in 1981, took no wave's guitar noise out of the club and into formal composition, using massed electric guitars tuned outside standard configurations to explore harmonic series and overtone structures most rock records never touched. The record's influence on Sonic Youth is direct and traceable: their approach to alternate tunings and texture comes straight out of Branca's method, and it demonstrated how the downtown aesthetic could be scaled up into something with real compositional ambition rather than staying a purely confrontational gesture.
How it was made
Glenn Branca's 1981 album The Ascension represented a significant expansion of his musical vision and technical achievement. Working with an ensemble of guitarists performing in alternative tunings, Branca created a composition that sounded like no rock music previously recorded—monumental, dissonant, harmonically complex, yet driven by an almost classical compositional rigor. Experimental music circles responded immediately. Musicians recognized Branca's synthesis of no wave's sonic assault with avant-garde compositional ambitions. Neil Young heard the album and declared it "a classic"—an endorsement that surprised many given the gulf between Young's blues-rock tradition and Branca's experimental approach. The Ascension's influence proved enormous: Thurston Moore and other Sonic Youth members cited it as shaping their approach to guitar and composition. Branca had demonstrated that rock guitar could explore frequency relationships and harmonic complexity comparable to contemporary classical composition. Subsequent noise rock musicians found in Branca's work a model for combining raw sonic intensity with compositional sophistication. The album remains one of the most important experimental music recordings of the 1980s.
