Released in September 1995, a month after "Country House" beat "Roll with It" to number one, The Great Escape entered the chart at number one and sold over a million copies in the UK. Opinion soon turned against Blur as Oasis's Morning Glory took over. Bassist Alex James later told the Guardian: "Blur won the battle, Oasis won the war, then Blur went on to win the whole campaign."
