Santo Amaro da Purificação
Brazil
This small Recôncavo town, forty miles from Salvador, is the birthplace of Caetano Veloso (1942) and his sister Maria Bethânia, making it the spiritual heartland of Tropicália. The town's Afro-Brazilian cultural traditions, including samba de roda and candomblé rhythms, deeply influenced Caetano's aesthetic vision. Santo Amaro remains a pilgrimage site for understanding the rural Bahian roots that Tropicália would later electrify and psychedelicize.
