Luton enters goth history through UK Decay, formed in 1978 and among the first bands explicitly labeled "gothic" by the music press in 1981. Their residency at Luton Technical College and releases on Fresh Records captured the genre's transition from punk's raw energy to goth's theatrical darkness. Though less celebrated than their contemporaries, UK Decay's 1980-82 output helped codify the genre's sonic vocabulary in the home counties beyond London's reach.
