Essex

Essex's post-rock legacy is entirely contained within Bark Psychosis, formed in 1986 by Graham Sutton in Bishops Stortford, whose evolution from post-punk to the expansive, jazz-inflected soundscapes of Hex defined the genre before it had a name. The band recorded at various London studios and played venues throughout the southeast, but their Essex origins and distance from London's city center seemed to inform their spacious, unhurried compositions. Bark Psychosis essentially dissolved after Hex, making Essex a one-band origin point whose influence was nonetheless foundational—Simon Reynolds literally invented the term "post-rock" to describe their work.
