Electronic pop trio formed by Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Yukihiro Takahashi in 1978 after collaborating on Hosono's Paraiso (1977). Hosono was looking for collaborators who could handle synthesizers—Yamaha CS-80, ARP Odyssey—that were shaping his exotica experiments. Sakamoto was conservatory-trained with avant-garde leanings; Takahashi was a drummer from the rock band Sadistic Mika Band. They recorded their debut in weeks, blending synthesizer pop with arch, ironic detachment closer to Kraftwerk than mainstream city pop's earnest romanticism. While operating in a different stylistic realm, their success validated electronic production techniques—precision sequencing, layered synthesizer textures, meticulous mixing—that city pop artists would incorporate. They showed that Japanese artists could not only match but exceed Western electronic music on its own terms.
