Wendy & Lisa

1983-1987 with Prince, duo 1987-present·Los Angeles

Members of The Revolution from Los Angeles who contributed keyboard and guitar work to Prince's mid-'80s masterpieces including "Purple Rain" (1984) and "Sign o' the Times" (1987). Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman brought melodic and harmonic sophistication that expanded what the Minneapolis Sound could be. As a duo starting in 1987, they continued exploring the sound's potential for genre-blurring composition, moving beyond the funk foundation into more experimental territory. Their work with Prince demonstrated that the Minneapolis Sound could incorporate rock aggression, new wave austerity, and pop accessibility without losing its core identity. Wendy's guitar work and Lisa's keyboard arrangements added layers of complexity to Prince's vision, their contributions evident on tracks that pushed beyond funk into uncharted sonic territory. As Prince explained to MOJO in 2014 about feminine energy in the studio, Wendy and Lisa provided creative input that balanced his more aggressive instincts. Their departure from The Revolution in 1987 marked the end of one era and the beginning of another, as they pursued their own artistic vision while carrying the Minneapolis Sound's influence into film scoring, production work, and their own recordings. They continue to work together, their partnership spanning decades and demonstrating the lasting impact of the Minneapolis Sound on contemporary music.
