Taeko Onuki

1973-present·Tokyo

Sugar Babe co-founder who pursued a jazz-inflected solo career after the band's 1975 dissolution, bringing harmonic sophistication and introspective lyrics to city pop's broader palette. Her work with Yamashita and Kunio Muramatsu in Sugar Babe, produced by Eiichi Ohtaki, established the meticulous approach to arrangement and harmony that would define the genre. While Yamashita took the Sugar Babe aesthetic toward commercial success, Onuki followed a more experimental path, providing a counterpoint to the genre's commercial mainstream.
