Swervedriver

1989-1998, 2008-present·Oxford

Oxford band who combined shoegaze's sonic density with more aggressive, motorik rhythms on releases like Raise (1991), representing a heavier, rock-oriented strain of the genre. While bands like Slowdive favored ethereal dreaminess, Swervedriver brought a harder edge—more influenced by Hüsker Dü and Dinosaur Jr. than the Cocteau Twins. They split in 1998 as shoegaze's commercial viability collapsed, but reunited in 2008 as the genre experienced renewed interest through internet discovery and streaming platforms.
