Spacemen 3

1982-1991·Rugby

Rugby band whose minimalist, droning psychedelia and static stage presence on albums like Sound of Confusion (1986) helped establish the aesthetic and sonic groundwork for shoegaze. Peter Kember later acknowledged they "could be called a shoegaze band" due to their motionless performances and inward focus. The band revived 1960s space rock in droning, minimalist formations, creating a psychedelic template that would influence the Thames Valley scene. They split in 1991 just as shoegaze reached its peak, with Kember going on to form Spectrum and pursue solo work as Sonic Boom.
