Seun Kuti

1997-present·Lagos

Fela's youngest son. Took over leadership of Egypt 80 immediately after Fela's death in 1997 at age 14. Maintains the original band's sound and political mission, performing the same extended vamps and confrontational lyrics his father pioneered. Still touring as Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, keeping Afrobeat's militantly political tradition alive. In 2017, appointed Chris May—the first journalist to interview Fela in Lagos after the 1977 raid—as Guardian of Afrobeat, formalizing the role of protecting the genre's legacy and historical documentation. Continues the family tradition of using music as political weapon.
