Ron Hardy

1977-1992·Chicago

The Music Box resident DJ known for chaotic, experimental sets. Kept a reel-to-reel machine in the booth to make edits live, splicing tape and looping sections on the fly. Would play two copies of the same record simultaneously, layering them. Would drop the needle randomly mid-track and let it ride. Introduced 'Acid Tracks' to the world by playing it for a year before its release. Previously resident DJ at Our Den/Den One, the only Black gay bar at a commercial level in Chicago before the Warehouse opened. Died in 1992.
