Phuture (DJ Pierre, Spanky, Herb J)

1985-present·Chicago

Created 'Acid Tracks' in 1986 using a Roland TB-303, accidentally inventing the acid house sound. DJ Pierre (Nathaniel Pierre Jones) bought the 303 without reading the manual and spent an afternoon with Spanky and Herb J turning knobs at random. When they hit the right combination—resonance cranked up, cutoff filter sweeping—the 303 started gurgling and squelching. Recorded a twelve-minute track that Ron Hardy played at the Music Box for a year before Trax released it in 1987. DJ Pierre later moved to New York and became head of A&R at Strictly Rhythm, releasing influential tracks including Photon Inc's 'Generate Power' and Joint Venture's 'Master Blaster.'
