MJ Cole
Born Matthew Coleman, he won his first piano competition at five and earned scholarships to the Royal College of Music for oboe. After graduating from City University, he worked as a tape operator at SOUR drum and bass label on £50 weekly wages. When Ramsey & Fen brought him 2-step remixes for Kym Mazelle, he bought an Atari and sampler, creating "Sincere" in 1998—a track whose jazz-rooted chord progressions and ambient pads broke into the top 40. His 2000 album *Sincere* earned a Mercury Prize nomination and beat Dr. Dre for MOBO's Best Producer. He proved garage could be sophisticated art, performing with a live band on *Top of the Pops* and *Jools Holland*. After years distancing himself from garage's troubled reputation, he returned in the 2010s, releasing tracks spanning dancehall to UK funky while maintaining his classical sensibility.
