Femi Kuti

1980s-present·Lagos

Fela's eldest son. Saxophonist, singer, and bandleader who inherited his father's political stance and musical approach. Born and raised in Lagos, grew up surrounded by Afrobeat and activism at the Kalakuta Republic and the Afrika Shrine. Multiple Grammy nominations. Continues performing Afrobeat and managing Fela's legacy through the New Afrika Shrine. Argues that Fela's creation of Afrobeat can be traced directly to his childhood in Abeokuta, where he grew up with African rhythms and folk songs, later fusing them with the jazz he learned in London and the politics he absorbed in Los Angeles. Maintains that Afrobeat is rooted in specific Nigerian cultural traditions, not a generic pan-African sound.
