Descendents

1977-present·Manhattan Beach

Descendents merged hardcore speed with pop melody and goofy, relatable lyrics about relationships and coffee. Formed in Manhattan Beach in 1977, they were part of the South Bay scene but stood apart—shorter, faster songs with actual hooks. Their influence on skate punk and later pop-punk bands like Green Day and Blink-182 is undeniable. Milo Aukerman, their vocalist, left to pursue a doctorate in biochemistry, returning periodically for tours and albums. Descendents proved hardcore could be fun, melodic, and still aggressive. Their mascot, Milo (a caricature of Aukerman), became iconic. They've split and reunited multiple times, with various members pursuing side projects, but they've never lost their core identity: fast, catchy, emotionally honest punk for people who overthink everything.
