Cologne-based collective built around ex-Stockhausen students Holger Czukay and Irmin Schmidt, who merged academic electronic techniques with rock's visceral energy. Their instant composition method—hours of improvisation edited into coherent pieces—and groove-based improvisations, especially with vocalist Damo Suzuki, created krautrock's funkiest variant. Jaki Liebezeit's metronomic drumming and Michael Karoli's processed guitar completed the sound. They recorded in a converted cinema, Czukay keeping tape rolling continuously and later editing with razor blades.
